kyoto has a several wonderful monthly handmade markets and antique/flea markets.

handmade markets: handmade market the 1st thrusday of every month: ichimoku tezukuri-ichi at umekoji-koen park 一木手づくり市 梅小路公園 (いちもくてづくりいち うめこうじこうえん it's about a 20 minute walk almost due west of the kyoto jr train station. map

handmade market the 15th of every month at hyakumanben, chionji temple tezukuri-ichi at hyakumanben 手づくり市 百万遍 (てづくりいち ひゃくまんめん)from the main kyoto JR train station, take bus # 206. from shijo street, if you are arriving by hankyu train to karasuma or kawaramachi stations, take bus #201 or #203. for any of these buses, get of at hyakumanben bus stop. map

handmade market the 4th sunday of every month, at kamigamo shrine facing the main entrance to the shrine, this entrance to the market is a little to the right. it's a bit smaller than the chionji market on the 15th, but is very pleasant and has a nice selection of crafts. map

flea markets: kobo-san market at toji temple 弘法さん 東寺held on the 21st of every month on the grounds of historic toji temple in the south part of the city, near JR kyoto station. toji temple is the iconic building with a tall pagoda that you can see from kyoto JR station.

tenjin-san market at kitano tenmangu shrine 天神さん 北野天満宮 held on the 25th of every month on the grounds of historic kitano tenmangu shrine in the nishijin area of kyoto.

handmade 4th sunday market at kamigamo jinja november 2009

this handmade market is held on the 4th sunday of every month, near kamigamo jinja shrine. facing the main entrance of the shrine, the market is a little bit to the right (across the small bridge). or coming from the bus stop, the market is a little beyond the shrine. these red banners are for the market.

it's a beautiful location, in the woods near a stream.

perhaps a little smaller than the chionji market on the 15th of every month, there's a nice collection of crafts.

antique market at kitano tenmangu shrine, 'tenjin' oct. 2009

there is a large antique market at kitano tenmangu shrine, also know as tenjin, on the 25th of every month. there are lots of food vendors too, with everything from homemade pickles to festival foods.

old kimonos for sale, as well as other clothes and fabric.


and everything else from antiques, to handmade crafts, coffee, and plants.

since summer is here, the handmade market at chionji temple in kyoto (the 15th of every month) has been really busy. lots of cute new summer things for sale, of course...like the glass summer bells (above) or whimsical creatures (below).
lots of zakka

and awesome feltmakers whose work i hadn't seen before. these dolls are so lovely!
and crazy tissue holders in the shape of animal heads!
and wee walnut mice.
